Statistics:
According to Postpartum Support International (PSI) approximately 1 in 7 women may experience postpartum depression (PPD), making it one of the most common complications of childbirth. PSI emphasizes that these disorders can affect women from all cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic backgrounds.
Alongside postpartum depression, perinatal anxiety disorders are prevalent. These can include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Impact on fathers: PSI recognizes that postpartum mental health challenges are not exclusive to mothers. Fathers and partners can also experience mood disorders, with rates ranging from 4% to 25%.
